at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Corvallis, Oregon
Every year in May the CSCA-Gondar organizes the Corvallis-Gondar Walk for Water to help raise funds to continue our work of building drinking water wells in Gondar. Register by clicking HERE.
The average distance that girls in rural Africa must walk to get water and carry it home (almost all of the water in Ethiopia is carried by girls). The most common container used in the Gondar region is a 20 liter plastic jug that weighs about 45 pounds when full. Often the source of water they walk to is a river or surface spring that is contaminated by animals or thick with silt.
Participants in the Walk for Water sign up to walk 5 km in community with the girls and women of Gondar. Participants also have the opportunity to experience carrying a plastic jug with 20 liters of water although they do not carry it on the walk. At the end of the walk is a “market village” with information booths, vendors, t-shirts, children’s activities, music from Ethiopia, and an opportunity to enjoy an Ethiopian cuisine.
The proceeds from the Walk for Water are used to construct more wells in and around Gondar city. In the past 8 years money raised from the Walt for Water and other sources have funded the construction of 20 wells that provide clean drinking water to more than 5,000 people.
