The U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa recently announced that a $12,000 grant has been awarded to Link Ethiopia, one of CSCA-Gondar’s nonprofit partners in Gondar, to create a first-ever kindergarten program in rural Gondar. The grant, along with over $10,000 from Corvallis-area donors, completes a funding package to allow the project to move forward.

The proposal to create a rural kindergarten program in Saina Sabia kebele came from the kebele leadership in 2016 because of their interest in early childhood education. Link Ethiopia, CSCA-Gondar, kebele leaders and the Gondar Ministry of Education formed a partnership to raise funds, create a curriculum, train teachers, construct classrooms and provide furnishings for the program. The kindergarten will also be one of the first to encourage participation by students with a variety of disabilities. Classes will begin in the fall of 2019.
