Sister Cities Month

Corvallis’ two sister cities, Gondar, Ethiopia and Uzhhorod, Ukraine, will be featured during the month of May which has been recognized as Sister Cities Month by Mayor Biff Traber. Both sister city councils will be honoring their sister city relationships with various outreach activities to the public.

In addition, a five-member delegation from Ukraine will be coming to Corvallis from April 28-May 7 as part of a partnership between the Open World Program and Corvallis Sister Cities Association-Uzhhorod Council. The delegation’s focus will be to observe and learn about advocacy, educational and work opportunities, fund raising, legislation, and programming for children with disabilities.

Here is a schedule of the upcoming sister cities events in May. All events are open to the public.

  • Monday, May 1, 6:00 pm
    Visit by the Open World Ukrainian Delegation at the Corvallis City Council meeting, Council chambers, downtown Fire Station, 400 NW Harrison Blvd.
  • Wednesday, May 3, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
    Public presentation co-sponsored by The Zonta Club of Corvallis and the Corvallis Sister Cities Association featuring representatives of the Open World delegation from Ukraine addressing the topic of “The War in Ukraine; A Women’s Perspective.” The event will be held in the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library Meeting Room, 645 NW Monroe in Corvallis.
  • Saturday, May 6, 9:00 am- 1:00 pm
    Corvallis Farmers’ Market booth featuring information about both of Corvallis’ sister cities — Uzhhorod and Gondar. Enjoy coffee from Gondar and chocolates from Ukraine.
  • Sunday, May 7, 9:00 am-4:00 pm
    Uzhhorod Sister Cities Council will be selling flower baskets as a fundraiser at the Corvallis Spring Garden Sale at Central Park. Proceeds will benefit upcoming exchanges and activities.
  • Tuesday, May 16, 4:00 pm
    Talk for Water 2017: A Cross-Disciplinary Discussion of Water “From Farm to Table” in Ethiopia. This is the Gondar Sister Cities Council’s second annual Talk for Water and will assemble OSU faculty and graduate students who are experts on agriculture, water, politics, and society in Ethiopia.

  • Saturday, May 20
    Annual 5K “Walk for Water Ethiopia” at the Benton County Fairgrounds
    8:30 am – Register or check-in
    9:30 am – 5K walk begins
    10:00 am – 1:00 pm – Market Village (food, music, children’s area)
    Cost: $10 for individual walkers, $30 for family walkers
    All proceeds from this event will directly support water and watershed projects benefiting the people of Gondar, Ethiopia. Registration is on site or online.
