Books for Gondar

”…creating a culture of readers"

Teachers and educational leaders in Gondar have expressed a desire for creating a culture of readers by exposing their students to the written word.

Current Project Update: Book Donation and Training

This project  consisted of supplying bilingual early readers, some requested academic books and teacher training.  CSCA-Gondar Council collaborated with the following two partners.

Open Hearts Big Dreams ( ) distributed bilingual early readers (on right) to the schools in this project. Together We Learn (, our sister city partner in Gondar, distributed these books to local school libraries.

Number of Schools Participating: 8

Number of participants: 32 participants (16 teachers, 8 directors, 7 librarians and a local education office delegate from Gondar City)

Amount of  books donated: 1,200 plus books (50 titles)

Amount of academic books donated: 815 academic books

5) Each extra year of schooling a girl has means she is less likely to be affected by child marriage, will choose to have children later, and that those children will be healthier. (Girls Education, The Facts, UNESCO, 2013

6) Only 1 in 4 children have a book at home apart from their school’s textbooks.(Together We Learn-Ethiopia)
